Organizations Involved

Located in the Rotunda of the National Archives Building, the Founding Documents - known as the Charters of Freedom - establish the principles of the United States and have inspired the American people to pursue a more perfect union for almost 250 years. Visit.Archives.gov is a website that allows web visitors to learn more about the National Archives and its visitor center.

Agileana invested more than 2,000 hours in user research, user experience (UX) design, frontend Drupal development, backend Drupal development, Drupal 7 to Drupal 10 migration, content migration, Elasticsearch implementation, user testing, and launch.

About the project

The National Archives Museum (NAM) in Washington D.C. is the flagship site for the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and provides access for visitors to the Nation’s founding documents, exhibitions featuring the vast collections of NARA, and immersive educational experiences. The current physical site is being redesigned and will be reopened in the fall of 2025. The newly redesigned NAM website will complement the physically redesigned exhibitions to be engaging and positively enhance online and onsite visitors' experience.

Why Drupal was chosen

  • Security: Drupal has a strong reputation for security, which is crucial for government websites. It offers regular security updates and has a dedicated security team. The platform is designed to handle sensitive information, making it ideal for government use.

  • Open Source: Drupal is open-source, meaning it is free to use and can be customized without licensing fees. This is appealing to government organizations looking to save costs while retaining flexibility in how they design and deploy their websites.

  • Customizability: Drupal is highly flexible and customizable, allowing government agencies to tailor their websites to specific needs. Its modular system lets developers add functionality and features easily, which is useful for the diverse needs of different departments.

  • Compliance with Accessibility Standards: Drupal has built-in support for accessibility standards (e.g., Section 508 and WCAG 2.0), which is critical for government websites to ensure that all citizens, including those with disabilities, can access public services and information online.

  • Scalability: Drupal is highly scalable, meaning it can support everything from small department websites to large-scale, complex government portals with high traffic and multiple services.

  • Community and Support: Drupal has a large, active community that includes government agencies, developers, and vendors. This community provides support, shares best practices, and contributes to the platform’s ongoing development, which benefits governments looking for a long-term, sustainable platform.

  • Multilingual Capabilities: For governments that need to offer content in multiple languages, Drupal’s multilingual features make it easier to manage translations and provide information to a diverse population.

  • Interoperability: Drupal integrates well with other systems and software, such as CRM tools, databases, and content delivery networks. Government agencies often have complex IT infrastructures, and Drupal's flexibility allows it to connect seamlessly with existing systems.
