Organizations Involved

The Wine Reserve is a UK-based wine merchant with a curated approach who pride themselves on selling only wines that their team has personally tasted and approved. The business is also trusted to supply wines for WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust) course participants, enabling learners to purchase course-specific wine cases directly through the website.

The Wine Reserve required a B2C ecommerce platform capable of managing a structured wine catalogue, flexible product groupings, and promotional pricing. The product catalogue and inventory are managed from their central purchasing system to automate the creation of the product catalogue and all category pages, together with accurate stock management

Open Imagination was engaged to design, build, host, and support a Drupal Commerce solution. This platform was designed to deliver a clear customer journey and give the small internal team full control over content, promotions, and pricing.

The site is built on Drupal 10 and uses Drupal Commerce as its ecommerce foundation, with Stripe handling payments and Klaviyo supporting customer email communications and CloudSend to handle shipments.

About the project

Goals

  • Deliver a B2C ecommerce platform for curated wine sales
  • Enable customers to build mixed cases with automatic case-based discounts
  • Allow administrators to manage promotions without developer support
  • Provide a secure and streamlined checkout experience
  • Support customer engagement through email marketing

Requirements

  • An ecommerce framework for managing products, carts, checkout, and orders
  • Administrative tools for managing discounts via the Drupal interface
  • Secure payment processing through Stripe
  • Integration with Klaviyo for customer communications
  • Pricing and promotion rules to support individual bottles and mixed cases

Outcome

Open Imagination delivered a Drupal Commerce solution aligned with The Wine Reserve’s operational needs. Customers can select individual bottles, with automatic case discounts applied when quantity thresholds are met, enabling flexible mixed case purchasing.

Promotions can be created, scheduled, and adjusted directly within Drupal using Commerce Promotions. Payments are processed securely through Stripe, while Klaviyo integration supports ongoing customer engagement. The platform provides a flexible foundation for future growth and enables the internal team to manage day-to-day ecommerce operations independently.

Why Drupal was chosen

Drupal was chosen for its ability to combine structured content management with advanced ecommerce functionality through Drupal Commerce. The platform supports selling individual bottles, enabling mixed cases through quantity-based pricing rules, and managing promotions directly through the admin interface. Drupal’s modular architecture also allows integration with third-party services such as Stripe and Klaviyo, supporting long-term maintainability.
