Organizations Involved

The Icelandic Intellectual property office changed their name 1st of July 2019. The change of name was made to better meet the needs of Icelandic industrial and business  environments.

Part of these changes was a new homepage, made with the clear goal of making it easier for customers of the organization to find information and to get answers to questions that burn on users as they go through the processes of the Intellectual Property Agency. The site's users come from a variety of sources, and it depends on the topics at each time, what they are looking for. Patents, trademarks, design protections, logos and other similar rights are examples of what users need to find and get clear information. The main purpose of the project was therefore to create a website that has a good search engine, a clear and accessible content structure and a design that supports the user experience.

1xINTERNET was in charge of content strategy, UX, web development and support. Hvíta húsið, an Icelandic ad agency, did the webdesign.

About the project

A great deal of work was put into analyzing the organization's target audience with the aim of providing each group with good services and access to the information sought. Workshops were conducted with key intellectual property staff to identify the needs of the user and their crawl through the website.
The site map was set up with two key target groups in mind, on one hand the entrepreneur who wants to seek information on his rights or protect his intellectual property and on the other the professional who comes to the site for a very specific purpose, whether it is to carry out agency work or seek information for certain trademarks or patents.
A lot of work has been done to reconstruct the general search engine on the web and allow the user to sort the results as needed. A search engine was also created for the trademarks that returns results from over 110,000 different trademarks. It is also possible to do a very detailed search for the trademark, owner and dates. See here. An advanced search for patents was also created in this project and can be found here.

All data  comes from the Sharepoint Intellectual Property database.

ElasticSearch

The search engines are set up in Elasticsearch, which has been specially formulated in Icelandic so that it is possible to distinguish between results using Icelandic special characters such as Ö, Þ and Ð. The front end of the search engines is Reactive search. In the coming days, a new application system will also be launched, which is also equipped with React and will also be connected directly to the Intellectual Property Agency's system. The website is constantly evolving and has improved the work environment for staff and other users that use the website regularly at work for example.
A lot of emphasis was put on the editor experience and flexibility to add content to the page. Each element on the page is individual and can almost be put together in any form the editor wants to display its content. This is very important in such a content rich website that not everything looks the same and the editor has flexibility to make the content the most appealing for the user visiting the page.

Why Drupal was chosen

The organization has been using Drupal for several years now, and wanted to continue using Drupal. The old website was in Drupal 7 and the new one was upgraded to Drupal 8. The website also has multiple API integrations and therefore Drupal is a perfect technology to support the need of the project.
