Community contributions

1xINTERNET are regular contributors to the Drupal project. Our co-founder Baddy Breidert is a board member of the Drupal Association. We make regular contributions and work with a large team of dedicated Drupal developers. 1xINTERNET co-founded the Icelandic Drupal-user-group and organized the first Icelandic Drupal camp - the Northern Lights Drupal camp.

The World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) is a global non-profit organisation dedicated to the education of young people through a value-driven system. To enhance the accessibility of its content, the World Scouting website needed an update. 1xINTERNET successfully implemented a multilingual CMS solution using Drupal 9, enabling the organisation to achieve its objectives of having a contemporary, user-friendly, and responsive website.

About the project

About the World Organization of the Scout Movement

The World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) is a non-profit organisation which was established in 1907 and has since become the largest global youth movement. Its mission is to contribute to the development of young people through a value-based system, encouraging them to become active citizens who play a positive role in society. With its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, WOSM operates seven regional offices and has a presence in 225 countries and territories, engaging over 57 million individuals through 173 National Scout Organizations worldwide.

The WOSM website serves as a hub for global scout activities, providing information on the scout movement, events, news, and participation opportunities. To ensure all content is accessible for visitors, WOSM decided to update their website. Initially the website was built on Drupal 7, the organisation sought the assistance of 1xINTERNET to make the transition to Drupal 9.

What problems were World Scouting facing?

The outdated Drupal 7 World Scouting website posed accessibility challenges for national scout organisations across the globe. As Drupal 7 was nearing its end-of-life, the website encountered issues due to lack of support for certain core modules. This prompted WOSM to seek an upgraded solution.

The website suffered from visual inconsistencies with its design, and the search function failed to provide accurate event and news updates, hindering users' ability to access necessary information. The website held a vast amount of content which needed to be better structured in order to improve accessibility and facilitate web editors to make it easier to update and maintain.

WOSM partnered with 1xINTERNET to redesign and redevelop the website, aiming to create an engaging and accessible platform for users worldwide. Restructuring the content and migrating to Drupal 9 presented a challenge as it required alignment with WOSM's content strategy and translation into multiple languages. Language translation was a crucial feature to ensure accessibility for diverse user groups globally.

How did 1xINTERNET help World Scouting improve and upgrade?

1xINTERNET collaborated with WOSM to develop an engaging and visually appealing website using Drupal 9 that met their requirements. The primary objective was to redesign and redevelop the website to fulfil user needs and align with WOSM's content strategy. Our CMS solution delivered a modern and responsive website, ensuring seamless functionality across devices.

Our design team created a fresh and consistent user experience (UX) design, incorporating a design system integrated with Storybook. Content was migrated and restructured to enhance accessibility for a wide range of users. A well-organised navigation system facilitated easy access to information. The new CMS solution streamlined website administration, improving the editorial experience and enabling content editors of all skill levels to efficiently maintain and enhance the site.

To achieve global accessibility, we integrated the Drupal translation management module TMGMT along with SmartCat to simplify the website translation process. SmartCat seamlessly integrated with the CMS, automating translation workflows and making it easier for web editors to manage translations. Given the global reach of Scouts, this feature was crucial in reaching their diverse audience.

We also integrated with the WOSM SSO (Single-Sign-On) solution, allowing users to log in using their WOSM credentials. This streamlined the login process, eliminated the need for users to remember additional Drupal-specific usernames and passwords, enhanced user experience, and facilitated content access.

Why Drupal was chosen

The World Scouting website was powered by Drupal 7, and the organisation were happy with Drupal as their preferred technology. Drupal is a robust open-source solution for sizable non-profit organisations, offering the advantage of no vendor lock-in which avoids additional costs. Upgrading to Drupal 9 was a clear decision for WOSM as they sought to enhance their website. By collaborating with 1xINTERNET, they selected a reputable Drupal specialist to oversee the migration process. The CMS solution delivered the desired features and functionalities, meeting the Scouts' content strategy requirements and enhancing the editorial experience for the content team.
