The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) is the largest and most established membership organisation committed to reducing the burden of cancer worldwide. The UICC website is an important communication and knowledge sharing hub, presenting the activities and services offered by UICC. It aims to raise awareness about cancer prevention and care while facilitating collaboration within the global cancer community.. 1xINTERNET was keen to assist UICC in their mission to create a solution that would facilitate access to content through an exceptional user experience.
About the project
Who is UICC?
The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) stands as the world's oldest and largest membership organisation devoted to global cancer control spanning the entire spectrum of cancer care, encompassing prevention, early detection, treatment, and palliative care. Established in 1933 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, this international NGO boasts a membership of over 1,150 individuals and 58 partners spread across 172 countries and territories. Collaborating closely with governments and international entities, UICC advocates for increased equity and endeavours to prioritise cancer control – including prevention, early detection, treatment, and supportive care – within the global health and development agenda. Through diverse initiatives, UICC tirelessly works towards enhancing cancer control efforts on a global scale.
Challenges UICC were facing
The primary goal of UICC website is to increase awareness and foster unity within the cancer community. The website was intended to support these goals by enhancing visibility, engaging visitors, and simplifying access to resources. However, the existing website encountered significant issues with the layout and UX design, making it difficult for users to reach essential content and resources. Moreover, establishing connections between users and member organisations proved challenging.
Recognizing these obstacles, UICC aimed to find a solution that would enhance the user experience and enable easier access to crucial information. The previous website operated on Drupal 7, an outdated system that had reached its end-of-life phase and no longer catered to the evolving needs of UICC. Understanding the importance of staying current and maintaining operational functionality, UICC sought an experienced partner to oversee the migration from Drupal 7 to Drupal 9. UICC wanted to integrate the new website with their CRM, Microsoft Dynamics, to streamline processes and bolster data management.

Enhancing Content Accessibility
UICC's primary focus was enhancing users' access to essential information. The design team at 1xINTERNET introduced a new UX/UI concept and design, enhancing navigation and ensuring crucial information was easily accessible to a global audience. Utilising the capabilities of ElasticSearch, we seamlessly integrated a solution enabling users to effortlessly explore a diverse array of content.
Seamless Transition to Drupal 9
We executed a flawless migration from Drupal 7 to Drupal 9, utilising this transition to reorganise content for enhanced website performance. Our focus was on enhancing the editorial experience, ensuring editing flexibility, and facilitating easy updates to the website and its news sections. This enables editors to publish informative and compelling content seamlessly.
Interactive functionality
We introduced an interactive "Map of Members" that allows users to explore global member organisations using a visually engaging map tool. Presenting information in a playful, visually appealing, and interactive way not only encourages engagement but also facilitates access to relevant content.
Integration with Microsoft Dynamics CRM
Our integration of Drupal CMS with Microsoft Dynamics CRM streamlined UICC's operations. This seamless connection enables convenient CRM updates, automatically reflecting changes in Drupal. This efficient synchronisation empowers UICC to efficiently handle relationships with member organisations while effortlessly updating crucial website information. The interactive map dynamically presents these updates, allowing users to explore global member organisations. This robust integration not only boosts UICC's data tracking and management capabilities but also guarantees a dynamic user experience.
Optimised for SEO
By implementing a thorough SEO optimization strategy, we maintained existing rankings during the migration and were able to improve overall performance. Following SEO best practices, we incorporated an advanced tracking system, providing insights into user behaviour and engagement. This empowered us to make informed enhancements, resulting in improved performance and increased rankings, thereby maximising UICC's online visibility.

Security is a top priority for an important global website such as UICC, and Drupal's secure and adaptable framework, along with its content organisation and editorial capabilities, enables efficient management of the growing traffic and content requirements.
