The College of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Sun Yat-sen University was established in 2017. The website has been in use for many years since its launch, and both its design and technology have become outdated. The college wishes to rebuild the website and integrate it into the Sun Yat-sen University website cluster management system, with the university’s IT department managing it collectively. This will make environmental management, deployment, version updates, and data backup simpler and more efficient.
Challenges
For the individual website being built, the difficulty itself is not significant. However, for the Sun Yat-sen University website cluster, effective management has always been a significant challenge. The environment setup, code deployment, and maintenance for hundreds of websites have consistently consumed a substantial amount of time and resources from the university.

While constructing the campus websites for the university, we addressed the challenge of managing the website cluster by building a website cluster management system for Sun Yat-sen University. Utilizing Kubernetes as the underlying technology, we developed a visual interface using Drupal to facilitate intelligent environment management and the rapid establishment of multiple environments, including development, integration, testing, and production. We employed methods such as Docker to deploy sites quickly, simplifying website deployment, updates, and backups. Additionally, we integrated tools for monitoring site resources, server status, log management, and access control.
Outcome
The website cluster system has greatly facilitated the unified management for the university’s IT personnel, and its use has been highly praised by the school for its effectiveness and efficiency. After the website cluster management system was launched, the College of Aeronautics and Astronautics of Sun Yat-sen University has also integrated its website into the system, allowing the college to be relieved from the burdensome task of website updates and maintenance.
