Community contributions
As a result of the continued work on deGov and nrwGOV, we have been able to make a number of contributions.
The popular module Permissions by Term was greatly expanded and is constantly maintained by our product team.
Members of the deGov / nrwGOV team have contributed to dozens of issues in community projects and the Drupal core.
Websites for public administration are associated with very special requirements for the content management system, for example with regards to privacy and accessibility. With deGov, publicplan GmbH responds precisely to these requirements and offers the federal, state and local authorities corresponding services based on open source software. On behalf of d-NRW AöR, publicplan has created a system tailored to the requirements of the state of NRW: nrwGOV. The foundation for this was the open source software deGov. The relaunch of the website for the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of the Interior was the first major project to be built using nrwGOV. An advantage from which both the users of the open source solution deGov and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia should benefit: The nrwGOV system developed in cooperation with d-NRW AöR is available to all public institutions in the state. Further developments that are useful to general web projects and not specific to the state NRW are fed back into the open source core deGov and are thus available to the entire community.
About the project
The Drupal distribution deGov already offers numerous functions in its basic installation, which are ideal for use in public administration. On behalf of the d-NRW AöR, publicplan, together with its partners 1xINTERNET and Reinblau, integrated specific extensions into the content management system (CMS), thus creating the nrwGOV system, a distribution specifically adapted to the needs of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. In order to be the platform of choice for future public websites and portals in the state, the software is available to all public institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia for free use. nrwGOV offers the perfect opportunity to technically modernize websites and present online content professionally.
Being the first major website built with nrwGOV, the website for the Ministry of the Interior mainly relies on the core functionality provided by the distribution. It has also benefitted greatly from the ongoing development of nrwGOV over time, gaining new features like responsive videos, time-controlled teaser references, and in-depth theme customization.

Why Drupal was chosen
A major advantage compared to other solutions is that the core of nrwGOV, the deGov distribution, is completely based on the open source software Drupal 8. It is freely available to everyone. As the world's leading open source CMS, Drupal benefits from a large developer community that is constantly developing and improving the system. This also quickly and reliably eliminates errors and security gaps; individually desired functions can be easily added. The open source approach offers maximum flexibility in implementation. This is not only of great importance for the different requirements of the public sector - it also opens up the design framework for new ideas.

deGov was chosen as the base distribution because of its focus of public service websites. With an exhaustive set of content and media types as well as a number of extensions focussed on privacy, it is the ideal foundation for government projects. Based on deGov, nrwGOV is the content management solution of choice for public institutions in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It features additional support for third-party solution providers local to the state, for example by integrating the state IT provider's maps service and the state's single sign-on service.
