Jägermeister is a German digestif beverage renowned for its distinctive flavour, crafted from a blend of herbs and spices. It has gained global popularity as Germany's leading spirit brand, available in over 145 countries. To foster collaboration among their large team of 1000+ employees spread internationally, Jägermeister in collaboration with 1xINTRANET developed a social intranet. 1xINTERNET played a pivotal role in enhancing the platform, simplifying knowledge transfer, and promoting transparency within the organisation.

About the project

Jägermeister, a traditional family business in Germany with a rich history spanning over 140 years, is renowned worldwide for its herbal liqueur crafted from a secret recipe of herbs, flowers, and roots. The drink is exported worldwide and has achieved great success.  Jägermeister aimed to foster collaboration and transparency among their 1000+ employees located across various countries with a social intranet. To achieve this, we developed a robust social intranet that serves as a comprehensive communication and collaboration hub for employees of the company.

The intranet integrates various features, including information sharing, social networking, effective search capabilities, and multimedia creation and sharing. This enables employees to connect, communicate, and collaborate effortlessly. The social intranet ensures universal access, allowing employees to connect and engage from anywhere, using any device, be it a desktop, mobile, or info-screen.

One of the primary objectives was to facilitate knowledge transfer across teams, offices, and countries. The social intranet effectively organises and manages knowledge, making it easy for employees to share and access information. By promoting knowledge sharing, we create a platform that strengthens collaboration and enhances productivity throughout the organisation.

Transparency is a crucial element in Jägermeister's organisational culture. Our social intranet promotes transparency which fosters an open and collaborative company culture, enabling employees to actively participate, contribute, and engage with one another.

The social intranet incorporates fun and inspiring elements that immerse employees in the brand's values and vision, thereby increasing satisfaction and engagement levels. Employees are encouraged to "Be the Meister" taking from the slogan of Jägermeister and cultivating a sense of pride and belonging in the brand.

From the client:

We needed a new innovative idea to make collaboration and communication between our internationally distributed teams more efficient. The goal was to make communication fast and more transparent. Use our new social media features and be able to inform our colleagues around the world. Our award-winning intranet fulfilled all these expectations and working with the 1xINTERNET team is very good."

Main features of the project

1xINTERNET is now responsible for the maintenance and continuous development of the social intranet, and works closely with Jägermeister’s PR team. Some of the new features that were developed by 1xINTERNET for the intranet include:

  • Notifications: To improve the notification system for new content sharing, we utilised Drupal to implement a system similar to Facebook's. Instead of relying on email notifications, employees now receive notifications directly within the intranet when they log in. This ensures that they see the notifications that are most relevant to them.

  • E-Learning: Jägermeister required a solution for employee training. Leveraging an existing open-source learning management solution (Opigno) based on Drupal, we integrated the functionality into the intranet so that course creators can upload Scorm files and offer courses directly within the intranet. Course managers have the ability to track employee registrations, course completions, and generate reports.

  • Auctions: We developed a custom auction tool using Drupal, allowing site managers to create auction items and employees to bid on them before the bidding period ends. We integrated this tool with the notification system to notify bid creators and participants about changes to the auction, such as new bids, winning bids, and losing bids.

  • Meal Plan: Initially, the meal plan was presented as a plain text page displaying the weekly menu. We enhanced this page by incorporating videos from the chefs, explaining the menu. Additionally, we enabled employees to add comments and engage with the content.

  • Events: We are currently in the process of developing a new solution that will enable editors/managers to create events directly within the intranet. Employees will have the ability to register for these events within the portal, eliminating the need to visit a separate site for registration.

Why Drupal was chosen

Drupal's flexibility, robust community support, content management capabilities, and security features made it an ideal choice for developing the Jägermeister social intranet. With its scalability and extensive module ecosystem, Drupal allowed for enhanced customization in creating a bespoke intranet for Jägermeister.
Drupal excels in managing complex content structures which was essential for a social intranet that required various types of content, such as news, events, documents, and user-generated content. The powerful content management framework of Drupal allowed for easy organisation, categorization, and retrieval of content. Additionally, Drupal's robust security and advanced user permission controls guaranteed data security and limited access to authorised individuals within the organisation.
