Community contributions

While the project primarily focused on custom development, it leveraged Drupal’s open-source ecosystem extensively, including Drupal Commerce and core APIs.

The implementation reinforced best practices in:

  • API-driven architecture
  • Scalable Drupal Commerce implementations
  • Custom synchronization workflows

OPTASY partnered with the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) to design and implement a custom Drupal Commerce platform to support online merchandise sales and operational workflows. The solution focused on integrating external systems, ensuring accurate data synchronization, and delivering a reliable, scalable eCommerce experience for a growing professional sports organization.

About the project

Goals & Requirements

The primary goal was to build a reliable and scalable eCommerce platform that integrates seamlessly with WFA’s existing systems. Key requirements included:

  • Launch a Drupal Commerce–based merchandise store
  • Integrate external APIs for product and inventory management
  • Implement custom checkout workflows aligned with internal operations
  • Synchronize order data with third-party fulfillment systems
  • Support post-purchase processes such as returns

Challenges

The project presented several technical challenges:

  • Handling large-scale product imports efficiently
  • Maintaining near real-time inventory accuracy
  • Resolving data conflicts between Drupal and external systems
  • Preventing data loss during partial or failed synchronizations
  • Ensuring system reliability as usage and data volume grow

Approach

OPTASY followed an engineering-led, iterative approach:

  • Designed a modular Drupal Commerce architecture
  • Built custom API integrations for product, inventory, and order synchronization
  • Developed tailored checkout flows to match business processes
  • Implemented logging, monitoring, and error-handling mechanisms
  • Enabled manual recovery workflows for edge cases and sync failures

Outcome

The final platform delivers:

  • A fully functional and scalable Drupal Commerce storefront
  • Reliable synchronization of products, inventory, and orders
  • Improved operational efficiency through automation
  • A streamlined purchasing experience for users
  • A flexible foundation for future enhancements and integrations

Why Drupal was chosen

Drupal was selected for its flexibility, extensibility, and strong support for complex integrations and custom workflows. Compared to traditional eCommerce platforms, Drupal Commerce provides:

  • Full control over data models and business logic
  • Seamless API integration capabilities
  • Robust user and content management
  • Scalability to support growing product catalogs and traffic
  • Strong community support and long-term maintainability

Given WFA’s need for custom checkout processes, external system synchronization, and tailored workflows, Drupal Commerce was the most suitable solution.
