Sector(s)
KGHM is one of the leading copper and refined silver producers. It specializes in exploiting and processing natural resources. The company operates worldwide, leading/conducting mining projects not only in Europe, but also in North and South America. As Smartbees, we were responsible for migrating the KGHM corporate website from the outdated Drupal 7 to Drupal 10.
About the project
The Goal
We aimed to migrate the KGHM website to a newer Drupal version without losing any key features. The main goals included:
- Facilitated content creation – our ambition was to allow building content tailored to the company’s needs and user expectations.
- Adjusted custom-made integrations – the company wanted us to adapt integrations to a newer Drupal version.
- Simplified navigation and improved website design – we wanted to ensure a better user experience and site efficiency.
The Solution
We led a successful website migration from an outdated Drupal 7 to Drupal 10. It was possible thanks to the standard Migrate API module and our authorial migration scripts.
Our development team put pressure on the following:
- Various paragraph types and content blocks – we allowed editors to create attractive content on any subpage. We ensured that the content-creating mechanisms made their work as convenient and intuitive as possible. Consequently, the website became more appealing.
- Integration with SAP Ariba – it helped the company manage online purchases on its website. This integration warranted significant process automation, for example, to minimize payment error risk.
- Search engine implementation – we based it on Apache Solr and also added a content indexing feature from an external site. It enabled users to find crucial company information in one place.
- Improved automatic newsletter – the previous newsletter module was no longer compatible with the latest Drupal version, so we found another solution. We enhanced users’ subscription experience at the same time.

The Effect
We streamlined administrators’ and editors’ workflows and made the website more user-friendly. As intended, we managed to adjust existing functions and implement new ones.
Here are the most important effects of our work:
- Top-notch website migration to Drupal 10
- Attractive content display and new creation options
- Far-reaching possibilities for development
- Convenient on-site search engine
- Revamped automatic newsletter
- Enhanced UX/UI
Why Drupal was chosen
- Preceding experience – the previous website was based on Drupal 7, so it was natural to perform a migration to a higher version.
- Unlimited development options – we wanted to provide boundless possibilities for the corporate website to grow.
- Reliable security system – it was crucial to ensure the lowest possible risk of data leakage.
