Meet Germanic National Museum

In the heart of Europe
In the centre of Nuremberg, the Germanic National Museum offers a journey through 600,000 years of European art, culture and history. The largest cultural history museum in the German-speaking world, it brings together high culture and everyday culture to provide a fascinating insight into Europe's cultural heritage.

We tell history
European culture has always thrived on exchange. It is a mirror of ancient, Byzantine, Arabic and Asian cultures. We want to identify influences and understand connections in order to tell the story. As a Leibniz Research Museum, we approach this heritage with respect and with all the possibilities of scientific research.

People and their things
A golden hat from the Bronze Age and the oldest globe in the world, the eagle brooch from Ravenna and the astrolabe from Syria illustrate the eventful history of mankind. This is as impressive as Albrecht Dürer's masterful sculptures or Wilhelm Lehmbruck's kneeling figure.

Architecture and the museum
A stroll through the museum is also a journey through architectural history: the post-modern entrance hall leads to the Gothic Carthusian monastery, the green gardens of the courtyards are reflected in the modernist glass buildings of Sep Ruf - together they form the GNM.

Our mission statement
As the national museum and museum of the entire German-speaking world, we collect and preserve evidence of culture, art and history from its beginnings to the present day.

As a research and educational institution of international standing, we present cultural history in an interdisciplinary way through our collections, exhibitions and publications. In the interests of our visitors, we communicate this content in a way that is accessible and lively.

As a place where people - regardless of age, origin, education and religion - can learn about and experience cultural contexts, the Germanisches Nationalmuseum is committed to respecting all cultures.
