Sonnenhof operates an animal sanctuary providing veterinary care and housing for rescued animals, with the goal of placing them with adopters. The website manages animal profiles, facilitates adoptions, provides educational resources on animal care, coordinates dog walking programs for rescued dogs, and publishes news about the sanctuary and its events.
Sonnenhof partnered with drunomics to modernize their Drupal 7 platform. The site was migrated to mossbo, a cloud CMS ecosystem that delivers a fully managed SaaS experience while maintaining open source flexibility. The migration utilized mossbo's comprehensive framework, which leverages proven strategies from successfully completed projects, to minimize risk and preserve existing content and SEO rankings while modernizing the frontend.
Project Requirements and Approach
Sonnenhof, as a non-profit without a technical team, required a migration solution from Drupal 7 that would be cost-effective and eliminate technical overhead. The project focused on two objectives: migrating all content with custom fields while preserving SEO rankings, and modernizing the platform.
Modern frontend design was implemented using mossbo's ready-to-use design system with reusable components for brand consistency. The animal content type received focused development, with drunomics creating distinctive teaser listings and detailed profile pages designed to attract potential adopters and facilitate adoption inquiries. Taxonomy structures for animal species (dogs, cats, rabbits, turtles) and breed classifications were implemented, with listing pages enabling visitors to easily locate animals by species and breed.
Technical implementation included image optimization balancing visual quality with file size, and responsive functionality across devices. mossbo provides ISO-certified European hosting with comprehensive security monitoring protecting against emerging vulnerabilities. Continuous maintenance includes automated updates, security patches, and performance monitoring, keeping the website running smoothly with essential security coverage and zero downtime.
Project Outcome
Migration to Drupal 10 was completed smoothly with all content and search rankings preserved. The modernized website provides visitors with an intuitive experience, enabling them to easily discover adoptable animals through organized species and breed listings, access educational resources on animal care, browse articles, and stay informed about shelter events. Optimized images and responsive design across devices create an engaging experience that draws interest in Sonnenhof's animal welfare work.
Following launch, automated upgrade to Drupal 11 was completed at no additional cost to the client. Sonnenhof's team now manages all content easily without requiring technical knowledge, while mossbo fully manages the infrastructure to remain secure, compliant, and modern. The implementation delivered the cost-effective, worry-free solution the non-profit required.
With Drupal 7 reaching end-of-life in January 2025, Sonnenhof needed to migrate their existing Drupal site to a supported and secure version. mossbo, built on the open source Lupus Decoupled Drupal project, provided the solution with its decoupled architecture combining Drupal's content management capabilities with Nuxt's frontend flexibility.
A critical requirement was supporting Sonnenhof's non-technical content management team. Drupal's intuitive admin interface and efficient content creation tools provide the necessary user-friendly experience. Additionally, Drupal's continuous evolution and adoption of modern technology ensures the platform remains scalable and sustainable for long-term use with robust security for a worry-free experience.
