The Shrimala Trust is a UK registered charity and limited company that supports the activity of the Awakened Heart Sangha. The Trust receives donations and spends money on behalf of the Sangha - while the Sangha is a community of people, the Trust is a legal entity.

About the project

The main goal of a site built with Drupal is to share teachings and values clearly, using structured content that makes spiritual resources easy to find and understand.

In the outcome users could:
โœ” create and manage accounts with personalized pages
โœ” register and pay for events or retreats online
โœ” access exclusive training resources once logged in
โœ” engage in discussions or comment on posts
โœ” fill out custom forms and receive automated follow-ups
โœ” get content tailored to their role (e.g., student vs. guest)
โœ” receive newsletters or alerts based on interests

Why Drupal was chosen

For an organisation like Awakened Heart Sangha, which has events, locations, news, resources and people aspects, Drupal is especially well suited because it supports many interconnected content types rather than a collection of isolated pages. Events can be linked to teachers, locations, and traditions; news items can reference upcoming retreats; and resources can be tagged, filtered, and reused across the site โ€” all from the same underlying content model.

Because Drupal is built around structured data and Views, the site can offer powerful filtering and discovery experiences. Visitors can browse events by date, location, teacher, or practice type, search resources by topic or format, and explore people or sanghas in intuitive ways โ€” all generated dynamically from the same content pool.

Drupalโ€™s editorial workflows are another strong fit for a community-based organisation. Multiple contributors can manage content with clear roles and permissions (editors, publishers, administrators), ensuring content quality while allowing decentralised updates from teachers or organisers.

Finally, Drupalโ€™s emphasis on accessibility, and standards compliance makes it suitable for an organisation that values inclusivity and broad reach, ensuring content is usable across devices, audiences, and future technical requirements.
