Organizations Involved

Established in 1966, Kuwait University is the first public research university in Kuwait. It offers diverse undergraduate and graduate programs, focusing on academic excellence, research innovation, and community engagement. As the leading higher education institution in the country, it plays a vital role in advancing education and regional development.

Describe the project (goals, requirements and outcome)

Unified Portal Development

The project aimed to create a unified, modern portal for Kuwait University, integrating over 50 subsites for its various academic centers and colleges. The goal was to centralize access to information, services, and resources while maintaining a clear and consistent digital presence across the institution.

Migration and Integration

A significant challenge of this project was migrating content from the university's previous Oracle-based portal to the new platform. This involved consolidating and organizing data from numerous subsites to ensure a smooth transition and maintain continuity for users accessing academic and administrative resources.

Design and User Experience Alignment

The website's design was completely overhauled to align with the modern vision of the university. The new interface is clean, user-friendly, and responsive, offering a seamless experience across all devices. The design improvements were made with the intent to enhance usability and to meet the expectations of a diverse group of users, including students, faculty, and staff.

Development Coordination

A structured development and deployment process was established to ensure that both the main portal and its numerous subsites were developed and launched simultaneously. This coordination allowed for a streamlined project timeline and ensured that all subsites were integrated with the main platform without delays.

Content Consolidation

With the new portal, a centralized content management system (CMS) was implemented to integrate the content of various academic departments, centers, and other units within the university. This CMS simplified the management of web content, making it easier for university staff to update and maintain information across subsites.

Infrastructure Upgrade

Alongside the portal’s development, the university’s IT infrastructure was significantly upgraded to support the new platform. This included enhancing network security measures and improving server configurations to ensure robust performance, faster load times, and improved reliability.

Staff Training and Ongoing Support

To ensure a smooth transition and successful use of the new portal, comprehensive staff training sessions were conducted. These sessions equipped the university’s staff with the necessary skills to efficiently manage and update the new CMS. Additionally, ongoing support was provided post-launch to address any challenges and ensure continued optimization of the portal.

By achieving these outcomes, the project not only delivered a modernized, responsive portal but also optimized the university’s digital infrastructure to support its ongoing growth and digital transformation efforts.

Why Drupal was chosen

Drupal was the best choice for the Kuwait University portal due to its scalability, security, and flexibility. Its ability to manage over 50 subsites under a unified platform made it ideal for consolidating content across multiple academic departments. Drupal’s customization options enabled a modern, user-friendly design that aligns with the university's vision. Additionally, its strong security features ensure the protection of sensitive data, while its integration capabilities facilitated seamless migration from the previous Oracle-based portal. The platform’s multilingual support and active community also provide ongoing resources for future enhancements.
