Our client is one of the world’s premier biopharmaceutical companies. They develop and produce medicines and vaccines for immunology, oncology, cardiology, endocrinology, and neurology. Spread across 50+ geographies our client has approximately 1000+ live sites and 2000+ staging sites hosted on Acquia Cloud Site Factory which include product sites, HCP portals in multiple languages and geographies, and more.
These websites are the core of our client’s digital ecosystem and required continual gatekeeping against security threats, audits, regular updates, new UI controls & feature enhancements.
Managing sites of this magnitude was a mammoth task. We partnered with Acquia to ensure the health and hygiene of 3000+ sites via regular Drupal core/module updates, module audits/certifications, PHP updates, etc. ensuring all sites were up-to-date and secure.
About the project
Client Requirements
Maintaining the health and hygiene of 3000+ websites with a decoupled architecture was a challenge for the client.
- To deliver a seamless customer experience, these websites required regular audits to identify system vulnerabilities
- Timely Drupal module upgrades were required to ensure that the sites were secure and up to date
- In case of feature enhancements it was required to audit multiple Drupal modules to verify how well were they supported along with their security risks.
- Improving the security and performance via a PHP upgrade was essential.

Timely deployments
Our team followed the Agile sprints methodology where we carried out regular deployments on the Acquia Cloud Site Factory platform post every sprint.

Ensured site security and uninterrupted functioning
We constantly updated Drupal core and upgraded contrib modules to their latest versions. This solved all the security issues and ensured that the client's site was not vulnerable to security threats. We also kept a close check on the system vulnerabilities and updated the Drupal core and contrib modules to resolve them.

Feature enhancements
With every new feature requirement, there was a need to introduce new Drupal modules. Our team audited 24+ Drupal modules based on how well they are supported and their security risks. We then identified the optimum modules and added enhancements to them. In this process, we also identified the outdated modules and deprecated the code.

Upgrading to PHP 7.1
PHP 7 has been a significant upgrade to PHP, since PHP 5. We upgraded our client’s website with PHP 7.1 which enhanced their site’s security, performance, stability, reliability and efficiency.

Our client has been using Drupal for a while now (since 2009). They chose Drupal as their content management system for their consumer-facing brands for numerous websites & markets across the globe.
Drupal helps build enterprise-level digital experiences. It is flexible to deliver the right content at the right time. With an active community and its regular updates, it is one of the most secure CMS. A good UX for content authoring making it fast to publish content. Drupal core in itself has more than 200 built-in features, not to mention the vast amount of contributed modules maintained by the community. With ACSF, scaling & managing Drupal sites becomes even easier.
