Organizations Involved

Anthony Veder, a global maritime transport company, needed to replace their end-of-life Drupal 7 intranet serving over a thousand employees working on ships and in offices worldwide.

Migrating to the latest version of Drupal enabled them to build an efficient platform, while retaining essential maritime operations capabilities such as vessel location tracking.

Describe the project (goals, requirements and outcome)

Challenge

The company needed to upgrade their intranet while addressing several requirements:

  • Improved user experience: the platform required a modern design with enhanced usability.
  • Low-bandwidth support: many employees operate from ships with limited internet connectivity.
  • Data preservation: the upgrade needed to maintain existing document organization, link structures, and external resource connections.
  • Secure authentication: integration with Okta identity management service via LDAP was required.
  • Feature retention: core capabilities like ship location tracking and document resources had to remain functional.
  • Enhanced communication: the platform needed to facilitate interaction among employees across different locations.

Solutions

The new platform addressed all of Anthony Veder's requirements while preserving existing functionality.

Data migration and preservation

The migration process transferred all existing data and content from the previous platform while maintaining document organization, internal link integrity, and connections to external resources. This ensured continuity for employees accustomed to the existing system.

Optimized for low-bandwidth environments

The platform features a responsive design optimized for efficient data transfer, enabling employees on ships with limited internet access to use the intranet without connectivity issues.

Secure authentication

The platform integrates with Okta identity management service via LDAP, enabling secure employee login through the company's existing authentication system.

Result

The new intranet, named wAVe, connects Anthony Veder's workforce across maritime and office environments globally. The platform enables ongoing communication and information exchange, keeping employees informed and engaged whether they work at sea or on land.

Examples of implemented features:

  • Ship location map - displays real-time positions of company vessels.
  • Event calendar - helps employees stay updated on company events.
  • Booking forms - allow employees to reserve meals and arrange office visits.
  • Document resources - provide centralized access to company information.
  • Interactive social features - comments and likes promote engagement across the workforce.
  • Bandwidth-optimized design - efficient data transfer enables employees on ships to access the platform despite connectivity limitations.
