Salsa Digital and Today.design followed user-centred design (UCD) to ensure the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) launched with a Consumer Data Right website that had been user-tested, iterated and re-validated. Putting the user first ensures complex information is effectively shared to individuals, small business and service providers. The website was built in the GovCMS Drupal distribution.
About the project
ACCC’s challenge
The ACCC needed a website to launch Australia's new Consumer Data Right. It needed to communicate this complex topic/legislation to different audiences, including citizens, small businesses and service providers.
Back to topACCC’s transformation — user-centred design and standards-compliant build
A user-centred design (UCD) process was led by our design partners Today.design. Salsa and Today used components from the Australian Government Design System to create a series of high-fidelity, clickable prototypes that were taken to user testing. Using a design system provided a standards-compliant user interface toolkit from which design concepts could be assembled. The clickable prototype enabled quick feedback, validation and iteration based on extensive user testing.
Several rounds of testing were conducted to refine the designs. A similar process was later used to test the effectiveness of the site’s content.
Back to topThe outcomes — user-centred website on GovCMS
The ACCC project team was able to test the effectiveness of the site for individuals, small businesses and service providers. The iteration of design ideas built confidence in the user interface prior to the site build and launch.
Other outcomes include:
- Compliance with the DTA’s service standard for design
- Compliance with the DTA’s service standard for technical approach
- Successful delivery to a non-movable, widely publicised timeframe
- Integration of the find a provider register
- A website with all the benefits of GovCMS (Drupal), including an easy-to-use CMS and a highly secure platform.
Why Drupal was chosen
Drupal was chosen as the preferred CMS for Australia’s Federal Government through the creation of the GovCMS platform, which was launched in 2015. GovCMS is designed to make it easier for government agencies to create modern, affordable, responsive websites. Importantly, GovCMS provides a whole-of-government platform to help consolidation across government departments. The fact that Drupal is open source means there are no expensive lock-in contracts, and GovCMS can build a Drupal/GovCMS community.
Technical Specifications
Drupal version:
GovCMS was chosen as a mature, whole-of-government Drupal solution that was moving to a headless and static implementation.
