Organizations Involved

We were approached by Awa2el to revamp their website and migrate it to Drupal 8 from Drupal 7.

The main objectives were to create an engaging digital experience that encourages collaborative academic learning for students in the Arab World.

Vardot transformed the website from a media library of content into a community-powered and collaborative education platform personalized to the needs and preferences of Awa2el's target users: students and instructors from the Arab World.

About the project

Overview

Awa2el was little more than a media library of learning and educational content. It suffered major UI and UX issues which impacted their performance and ability to attract the target audience they needed: young students.

Keeping their desired demographic in mind, Awa2el decided to revamp and transform their website into a platform that enables effective education and discourse in the Arabic language.

Personalizing Open Social

Since our project objective was to transform Awa2el into a social learning platform; we relied upon Drupal solution Open Social.

We added our own amendments to personalize Open Social to fit an ideal collaborative education experience:

  • Localized Open Social for an academic digital experience for the Arab World.
  • Added gamification features such as points and rewards for engagement.

SEO for Arabic Content and User Behavior

Awa2el is fully optimized for all the content and material formats that will be uploaded by the community on the platform.

Awa2el video content

The outcome was the largest collaborative education platform localized for the Arab World powered by both Drupal 8 and an ever-growing community of 85,000+ members.

Why Drupal was chosen

To create an engaging digital experience

Drupal was selected initially due to its content media flexibility and reliability but they decided to stick with Drupal due to the ability to optimize human interaction and engagement via digital experiences that Drupal excels at.

We used out of the box Drupal solution Open Social to enable social communication features like chat, discuss, follow and etc.

Structured and Easier Navigation

We migrated their older website which was built on Drupal 7 to Drupal 8 enhancing the media management, flexibility and UX for the platform users.

The registration process now takes 20 seconds or much less.

Key modules/theme/distribution used:

Why these modules/theme/distribution were chosen

The Open Social distribution consists of a package of pre-configured modules that form one of the most powerful Drupal 8 distributions to date. It comes with configured implementations for key social modules such as:

Group
A great new module to create arbitrary collections of content and users. It has a separation of concerns, using a full-fledged group entity that contains all the richness from the Entity API in core!

Message
Integrated as part of our Activity Stream, because it works well with tokens and translations.

Search API
A framework for easily creating searches on any entity known to Drupal, using any kind of search engine (as Apache Solr). In our case, it allows us to build flexible searches on content (Topics and Events) and users.

Profile
Conceptually different than user account settings. With multiple profile support and private profile types, the Profile module gives great flexibility for configuring user profiles.

Bootstrap
To make the Youth4Peace's user-interface intuitively understandable for a wide range of users, we use Google’s Material Design principles and as a base theme we use Twitter’s Bootstrap. Bootstrap is included by default in the Open Social distribution.
