Abduzeedo or ABDZ (as it is shortly called) is a very popular inspiration platform for designers of all kind. It was founded in 2006 by Fabio Sasso, a Brazilian designer who works for Google. It was started as a personal blog but now has grown into one of the design world’s most sought after blog for inspiration and tutorials. Abduzeedo draws in more than a hundred thousand design enthusiasts a day and almost three million a month.
About the project
The goal was to migrate the website from Drupal 7 to Drupal 8 with a new custom built theme. We worked along with Fabio Sasso in building the theme in Drupal. We did the content migration from Drupal 7 to 8.
Some of the good features of this website are -
- We have also used Drupal core's experimental caching system - Big Pipe in this website.
- The theme of this website was a custom built one. Being a designer himself, Fabio Sasso built a unique theme for his blog. The theme was built according to the latest trend and having best user experience in mind. The theme is a clean and clutter-free UI offers users a distraction free experience. There are ads on the website but those are placed in such a way that it does not affect the user experience.
- This theme also uses Lazy Load which loads the content first and loads the images later as the users scroll through the webpage. This helps very much in faster page loads.
- The website automatically switches to night mode after evening according to the computer's time. You can also manually switch to night mode by pressing the "N" key.
- The posts previews shown in grid views have an amazing shadow effect. When you hover over an image of a post's teaser, a shadow appears and the shadow's color reflects the color which is prominent in the image. This is really a cool feature for a blog!
Why Drupal was chosen
Drupal 8 was chosen because of it's flexibility and friendliness to edit content. This is a blog after all! Another thing was performance where Drupal 8 has an improved caching mechanism. This website drives a lot of traffic and contains huge number of blog posts. Drupal can handle this at ease.
