Introduction & About the Client

TraceLink operates the world’s largest digital supply chain network for healthcare and life sciences. Originally developed to manage global track-and-trace for pharmaceuticals, TraceLink's blueprint for supply chain digitalization became the foundation for end-to-end digital networks that connect products, processes, companies and systems to address challenges like drug shortages, product recalls and real-time inventory visibility. By integrating into the TraceLink network, organizations and their supply chain partners can seamlessly exchange information, collaborate and unlock collective insights that support smarter business decisions.

As TraceLink expanded its solutions, including its Platform as a Service (PaaS) offering, the existing website’s complex navigation and content structure hindered visitors from fully understanding the complete range of products and services, leading to high bounce rates. To mitigate these challenges, TraceLink partnered with Material for a comprehensive redesign of their site.

Describe the project (goals, requirements and outcome)

Tracelink wanted to

  • Transform its brand identity beyond serialization and track-and-trace provider to a comprehensive end-to-end supply chain solutions leader. The goal was to establish a digital front door that clearly represents the brand’s evolving direction and amplifies its digital impact.

  • Redesign its website to streamline content publishing and simplify complex navigation, making it easier for visitors to explore the full range of products and new PaaS offerings.

  • Address high bounce rates by improving the information architecture and delivering an engaging, user-friendly experience.

Our Solution

  • Established detailed site maps, standardized content models, a cohesive Design Language System (DLS) and measurement plans to ensure clear structure, consistency and effective performance tracking.

  • Streamlined the navigation with a structured three-level menu (L0, L1, L2) to facilitate smooth transitions between pages and reduce bounce rates.

  • Utilized Acquia Cohesion (Site Studio) to create a drag-and-drop interface, enabling the editorial team to generate content efficiently.

  • Added hero banner options for flexible visual representation, targeted content promotion to support campaigns.

  • Introduced user-friendly fonts to improve readability and information consumption.

  • Developed “Explore the TraceLink Network” interactive graph, allowing users to explore the interconnected elements of TraceLink’s supply chain network and understand its complex orchestration.

Outcome

By uniting specialists across strategy, design, and development, Material ensured both creative and technical goals were achieved, resulting in a seamless and effective solution. Our collaboration

  •  Increased conversion rates and enhanced SEO through optimized content and technical improvements.

  • Strengthened TraceLink’s authority, credibility and industry reputation with the redesigned digital presence.

Why Drupal was chosen

TraceLink needed a solution to simplify website maintenance and content management while offering scalability and flexibility. Drupal paired with Acquia products stood out as the ideal choice for the following reasons.

  • Seamless integration: Acquia Site Studio's API-driven design ensures seamless integration with third-party systems, enabling effortless functionality expansion and enhanced connectivity.

  • Enhanced editorial efficiency: The drag-and-drop features and reusable components make it easy to rapidly create and update themed pages.

  • Optimized cloud hosting: Acquia Cloud's pre-configured, secure environment ensures Drupal-optimized hosting. This reduces development time and resource requirements.

  • Quicker issue resolution: Log streaming services and access to physical log files on servers and New Relic ensure quicker debugging and custom alert management for production issues.

  • Easy content updates: Custom ‘helper templates’ allow in-house teams to update content and make design changes without coding, with real-time preview for quick review.

  • Smooth integration with Drupal: Site Studio seamlessly integrates with Drupal's backend. This ensures changes are stored in a structured, scalable way, separate from the Drupal Configuration System and managed with sync packages.

  • Real-time editing: Inline editing allows users to make changes directly on the live webpage preview, providing an instant "what you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG) experience.
