The challenge

We had to standardise the digital ecosystem in close collaboration with the teams based in Louvain-La-Neuve (Belgium) and Pittsburgh (USA). We also had to develop the information architecture to take account of the specific features of their respective markets and business sectors.

In addition, the highly technical content had to be made accessible to engineers, industrialists and professionals in the sectors involved.

Finally, the aim was to position the company as an innovative and key player on the international map.

The solution

Our main objective was to rationalise Carmeuse's digital presence by concentrating corporate information on a single site designed to cover the needs of all the markets in which Carmeuse is active.

The main site, initially developed in Drupal 8 and available in sixteen languages, enables a team split between Belgium, the United States and Slovakia to manage all content and translations directly from the back office, thanks to the installation of a DeepL module.

In addition to the corporate site, mini sites have been developed on the same technical basis as the corporate site, but this time tailored specifically for new entities (Brazil, Colombia, which are joining the group, etc.).

Why Drupal was chosen

Since taxonomy management is an integral part of the Drupal architecture, the management of products, services and applications by market has been optimised. Managing translations asynchronously was a major requirement for Carmeuse, as not all products and services are available for all markets. Here again, Drupal scores well against other open-source solutions such as WordPress.

We have also integrated SEO modules, which are necessary for optimising and referencing, a particularly critical issue in the case of a global company like Carmeuse, involving sophisticated management of URL redirects, with an appropriate ‘country/language’ structure.
